Bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson and trumpeter/pianist Guy Few dazzled a rapt Colours of Music audience at Burton Avenue United on Wednesday afternoon.

The duo, known as 'Nadina & Guy', grabbed attention both visually and aurally.

Slightly unconventional in appearance wearing leather and Nadina's blue hair, musically, they transported the listener in an eclectic programme ranging from Bach to modern.

Two short sonatas by Paganini, originally studies for violin and guitar, started the program. Numbers by Canadian composer Mathieu Lussier, a former student of Jackson's, although contemporary, were harmonically pleasing pieces. A set of variations by the 17-year-old Beethoven closed the first half.

After intermission, Bach's beautiful Adagio from Nadina, and Harry Simeone's haunting Trumpet in the Night from Guy, were followed by fierce displays of technique from both players culminating in the difficult Sonate for bassoon and piano by Saint-Saens.

A tango by Piazzolla as an encore completed a most satisfying afternoon.
